Group Therapy

Open | Virtual

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy where a small number of people who share a challenge or barrier meet together to discuss and work through their struggles and emotions. I am there to offer the same strategies we would pursue in individual therapy, using techniques including cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness methods, and humanistic treatment. In group counseling you also learn from each other.

Virtual Group therapy is an effective treatment option for a wide range of mental health concerns. It can be used alongside individual therapy or by itself.

About Virtual Group Therapy

I choose to do therapy groups where this group support can be most powerful and effective, such as fear of flying groups and public speaking anxiety group therapy.

Virtual group therapy offers even greater confidentiality and privacy than in-person groups, but you are still encouraged to participate as much as you are comfortable.

The only requirements for teletherapy groups are that you have your camera on, you stay for the entire time, and as much as possible you go to every group counseling session until you’ve reached your goals.

About Open Concept Group Therapy

I offer group therapy services with an open concept, meaning you can join for as long as you want and at any time. This prevents the need to wait until a new group starts, end group counseling before you are ready, or stay in even after your challenges are resolved. This page goes over the basics of group counseling, and then more information about my specific therapy groups can be found on other pages.

Benefits of Group Therapy

Interpersonal Learning

This form of treatment provides opportunities for individuals to explore their interpersonal patterns and dynamics within a safe and supportive environment. Members can receive feedback from others and learn how their behaviors impact others.

Hearing others share similar struggles can help individuals feel less alone and normalize their experiences, which is a hallmark of group counseling.

This form of treatment allows individuals to interact with others experiencing similar challenges. This group counseling dynamic can provide support, validation, and different perspectives on the discussed issues.

Group therapy sessions may focus on teaching specific skills, such as communication techniques, stress management strategies, or coping skills.

Sample Group Counseling Session

5:00 pm
Check-In

You’ll wait in a waiting room that allows for chat – just like in an in-person waiting room. You can remain private, however.

5:10 pm
Welcome

We’ll welcome new members first. You can identify yourself however you want to the group – many people choose first name only. You can say where you’re from if you’d like.

5:15 pm
Sharing

In this part of treatment, members can share any updates such as achievements and experiences. All sharing of this kind is completely optional.

5:25 Pm
Education

This is the educational portion of group counseling, where I will share techniques and ideas for overcoming barriers.

5:45 pm
Planning

In this portion of group counseling, I may give general “homework,” and people are free to share their own plans or what they are worried about to get support.

6:00 PM
Check out

This optional portion of group therapy gives you a chance to talk to others virtually, again, just like you might in person after group.
